Playa Buyé has two personalities. You enter from the rowdy side, with motor sports, dancing, and lots of music from battery powered speakers with different DJ's competing. On the other side of the same beach is a very different treat. A secluded cove with calm waters warmed by the beaming sun.
On the edge of the water Portia trees mingle with palms, their branches curving down into the salty, wet sand. Between each bundle of trunks (they grow in clumps) is just enough space for a few people, giving everyone perfect privacy from their neighbor. It’s a trek to get to this spot, especially with a cooler and beach chairs in tow, so it is mostly populated by the yachting crowd.
The boats stay a while, drop a lazy anchor into the sand. People hop off for a swim and a sunbath. They blast their sound systems for while and then pack up again. As the afternoon sun gets further from its zenith, the mariners hustle back to their respective marinas. The few that made the journey on foot are joined in a brotherhood of peace and quiet.
Conspiratorially we give each other satisfied nods as the last boater pulls their anchor. We know the last hours before sunset will be ours and ours alone. So we happily sink back into the sand for a little siesta. Oh, Buyé!
