Anyone who knows Rincón even a little has heard of “Domes Beach”. Its name-giving smooth white dome is so famous, it’s even featured in an issue of the Fantastic 4, where the big showdown between artificially evolved monkeys and the Puerto Rican super hero “El Vejigante” takes place inside the now decommissioned Boiling Nuclear Superheater (BONUS) Reactor Facility.
But if you aren’t a surfer, one’s familiarity often doesn’t go beyond name recognition. I only knew domes beach from campfires celebrating the full moon nights. I had never really seen it during the daytime, ... until I did the Rincón lighthouse sketch. I walked around the park a bit that morning. The view was just stunning.
The morning sun falls shallow across the palms, casting long shadows onto the perfectly pipe-shaped waves that roll in in neat sets of three. Little black dots bob where the waves originated. Every once in a while one or more of them get mysteriously tickled into action. They glide smoothly out of the water onto their colorful boards, ride towards shore with elegant and athletic control, then fall back into the blue only to swim out again to do it all over. It’s fascinating to observe. A beautiful dance of ocean worshipers.
I came back several time to capture this scene.
