Cows At Sunset

The Story behind the painting

I  have been crazy busy getting this business up and running. One Thursday I decided to get away from it all and paint one of the most fabulous spots in all of Rincón: Tres Palmas Marine Reserve.

With  everyone at Artwalk it was a quiet evening on 413. I walked back and  forth trying to decide on my favorite vantage point. Not an easy task. I have a feeling this will not be my last painting here. When I finally  settled down, right where I had parked, the cows all began to crowd in. They were a bunch of curious yearlings with adorable faces. They all seemed to abide by the idea that the  grass was greener on the other side of the fence. Anytime I pulled out a bit that they couldn’t reach they eagerly devoured it. I think a cow would make a delightful companion.

In  the distance a couple of donkeys dozed in the warm light. As soon as  the sun threw the first touch of orange into the sky, the baby donkey  stopped where he stood and fell asleep.

Every  minute the scene just seemed to get more beautiful. I just couldn’t capture it fast enough, so I abandoned my sketch and switched to my  camera to take a few snaps.

This scene was one of the hardest things to paint in watercolor. The colors  are quite impossible to capture. The blues of the sky and the yellows  and oranges go seamlessly into one another, but instead of adding up to  green or brown (as one would ordinarily expect), they just make each other brighter. Over the next week I struggled and despaired over this  painting. I worked the paper to it’s limits.

I hope to have captured just a fraction of the beauty of that evening.  And I hope this extraordinary place and it’s beauty can be experienced  by many future generations. If you do too, please support the actions of  “Salva Rincon!”. Check out the Website at http://www.salvarincon.org/ and the facebook group “NO! al megahotel y casino propuesto en Rincón” .
